Just started working on the Hackpad mission. So far, I only have built the guide version of the PCB, no case, no code. I have had troubles with drawing the lines, or at least I think so because the blue lines for me were touching the blue circles, but not in the image provided in the guide, but I don’t think it’s an issue. And drawing the rectangle in edge.cuts, I don’t even know if that part is properly done. tomorrow I will be checking if everything’s correct, then build a custom version of the PCB (haven’t decided what to add yet) and hopefully build the case as well.
Somehow it took me a while to figure out how to round up the edges of the pcb to give it a cleaner look. After figuring out how to do it i found out it was actually pretty simple, takes a few seconds max.
I have little to no idea what im doing. Finished building the schematic, added led lights, learned what “vcc” means. Started building the pcb but the wiring is very unstructured. ran the drc and have 37 errors because i think that theres no clearance for the leds so i have to fix that tomrorow but besides that everything should be fine
just troubleshooted today and realized the errors i was getting in drc about leds dont need to be fixed. prob gonna start building the case tomorrow
still havent started building the case, yesterday i realized the switches and diodes and leds werent exactly lined up so i fixed it using chatgpt because i couldnt quite understand the grid system and how to use the features of the grid. just asked chatgpt to provide the x and y coordinates
I have finally finished the case and the pcb, but unfortunately had to use AI to build the case for positions/coordinates of some stuff and with screws because fusion360 is really confusing and i recorded basically 1 hour 30 minutes of me making no progress with building a case because i couldnt figure out controls and google wasnt really helpful, plus im not really sure the exact rules of what is allowed for me to record using lapse or not so i kept pausing every few minutes. i did learn a lot about building using AI. I am now moving onto the firmware
Finished making the firmware, the github repo and everything needed to ship the project....

Devlogs:
I started working on this mission: The main functionality of the site is fetching real-time data from NASA’s API and displaying it. Each day, the site automatically loads the space image along with its title and a detailed explanation written. The JavaScript handles async API requests using fetch(), processes the response, and updates. It also includes basic error handling for failed requests (need to fix it next) and a loading state so users know when data is loading. UI: I designed a custom UI. A refresh button was added so users can manually load the latest APOD data. Up next Next step is creating the styling adding animations, and polishing the layout to make it feel more like a dashboard.
Update: I mainly focused on improving the styling and overall feel of the project. The interface now looks more polished, with better spacing, shadows, and an effect that makes the content stand out more clearly against the animated star background.I also improved the refresh button so it properly re-triggers the API request and shows the loading state again. On top of that, I added an error handling so the app now displays a message. Overall, the project now feels visually refined. Up next is adding a footer, and animations (probably some fonts too).
In this update, I focused on improving the visual design of the project and making the website feel more polished. I added custom fonts to give the site a more futuristic look and added several animations, including fade-in effects, image transitions, and hover animations. I also added the footer and a link to my GitHub profile. And I think the project is done!

Live here: https://stashm10.github.io/NASA-Pulse/ This was my first time actually setting up a full pipeline from scratch –> Vite for the build, GitHub for version control, GitHub Actions for CI/CD, and GitHub Pages for hosting. I’d used git before but never wired together a real automated deploy flow, so that part alone was a good learning curve. Currently, this website is a little slow in terms of loading speed. After deploying, the site would sometimes work fine and sometimes just hang on “Loading…” for a minute before failing. Turns out NASA’s own API servers were timing out, not a bug in my code. Confirmed it by hitting the raw API URL directly and getting a server timeout error. Ended up adding a timeout + automatic retry so the site fails faster and recovers on its own more often instead of just hanging. What I’d do differently Honestly, not much. Going step by step through GitHub setup -> local scaffolding -> coding -> deployment in that order made debugging way easier than if I’d tried to do everything at once. Testing locally before pushing saved me from pushing broken code multiple times. What’s next A few ideas I want to come back to: Add a date picker so I can browse past APOD entries, not just today’s Handle the “already have a token but rate-limited” case more gracefully, maybe cache the day’s response so repeated visits don’t hit the API again Clean up mobile styling a bit more — the zigzag decorative strips are hidden below 600px right now, but I want to double check the rest of the layout holds up on smaller screens Maybe swap in a search-by-date feature or a “random APOD” button for fun Takeaways This was a good first real end-to-end project AND not just “write some code” but actually shipping something live, dealing with a flaky third-party API, and setting up a deploy pipeline that runs itself going forward.
