I was still working on this earlier but I didn’t know what to post, like what to show. Btw this project is kinda small but helpful. I had already done this. You can see the file “virtualpad.c” in the screenshot But it only worked specifically for my controller only, it was graved into the code and it will be a hustle to change anything everytime for a new controller. This project is kind of a remaster so that everyone can easily set their own mappings easily. History of this project: It was 1st of June this year and my vacations were about to start. So I wanted to buy the Xbox Gamepass Ultimate so I can play on cloud cuz I don’t have a powerful enough device. (I wanted to play Doom 2016, Doom: The Dark Ages and Doom Eternal btw but Doom Eternal got hard to beat on a controller eventually for me). The Website only accepted Controller input for those specific games, I had one controller but it was not getting detected on the website. I tried many other things like custom Xbox drivers for my controller to work on the website but they just didn’t work as intended. So I just decided to make my own program written in C for this purpose. I made it but mappings were engraved into the code and it was hard to test and figure out for other users. That’s what I am trying to do. I am trying to make something which I required earlier so someone else doesn’t have to struggle again."}]...

Devlogs:
Downloaded the kicad files and uploading them. Had some difficulty with finding the files and organizing the keyboard switches.
After working for 2 hours, the app randomly closed down so I lost all progress. I had to reorganize the layout of the pcb and took this opportunity to change some things around and how it will look. Also made some space in the corner for an oled screen. Tried to connected the wires on the pcb but couldnt get the placements right so i deleted the wires I already have and will retry.
Connected the wires to the switches and the U1 in the pcb. Had some trouble with placing the the components in a position where all the wires could be connected. Then once I was done with both sides of the pcb, both the red and blue wires, I moved on to the DRC and checked for any errors. I had to change the shape of the pads from oval to circle and make them smaller on the U1, which is the MOUDLE-SEEEDUINO-XIAO, because they were touching the wires and that was an error. Another error I ran into was the wires being too close to components on the switches so i had to move them and make them slimmer because they were 0.2mm away from the components. I had an issue with pad 3 of the U1 and pad 2 of the 6th switch being extremely close so once I moved U1 I had to reconnect some of the wires again.
I had misplaced the U1 in the pcb so I had to move it in order for the start of the usb socket to be at the edge of the pcb. After I moved the U1 I had to rewire some wires in the pcb and afterwards I ran the test and everything was fine. I saved the file and then I saved the pcb as gerber file to check how it looks on jlcpcb. I then moved onto Fusion and started the case. I created a base after I measured the size of the pcb on kicad and made another rectangle 3 mm larger on each size. I then extruded the larger triangle and moved the pcb step file and the lcd onto the case and checked if it fits.
I remodeled the case because the measurements were incorrect. I moved the U1 on Kicad a little outside of the pcb because since the case’s thickness is 10mm on each side, the U1 would be too far inside the case. Although I moved it, it’s still not quite right so I will have to make the walls less thick. I had some trouble building the walls and the holes because I couldn’t figure out the margins but I got it to work my manually measuring the distances. I also placed the pcb, oled displace and switch to check where the wall of the case should end and how tall the plate/cover of the case should be.
I finally finished the case!! After I trimmed the sides of the case to fit the Seeed XIAO RP2040, I also made the holes for the screws larger to fit the head inserts. I also made some corners around the sub c socket so that it would not wiggle around when I plug it in. I made the around the usb c socket larger to have enough space to fit the head of the cable around the usb c since the socket does not hang at the edge of the case. I also cut out the holes for the switches using the plate model and cut out the oled display space as well as some extra space underneath it to fit the other parts around the oled that are going to be inside the case. In the end I also curved the edges of the case and socket. I had some trouble figuring out how to use fusion but I’m slowly getting the hang of it. Over all I’m pretty pleased with how the case looks!! I also made sure that the 5mm heat inserts would fit and have some extra space left.
Started the firmware. I downloaded QMK firmware but was a little confused on what to type. I figured out that I had to type it line by line instead of copying and pasting the entire code on the QMK firmware website.
I’m finally and hopefully done with macropad. I set up the qmk and struggled a lot through it. I kept getting warnings and errors but i got it fixed. I also uploaded everything to github. I had to zip some folders but they contained a lot of files. Overall I enjoyed the process even though it took me a really long time.
I made some changes arounf the case. Like I fixed the cutout for the usb. Then I realized my plate and pcb holes for the switches did not match up so I had to reposition the switches on the pcb and rewire it. Also every time I made changes to the rp2040 ont eh pcb it would say that the footprint does not exist so I had to leave the microcontroller as is even though it gives me silkscreen warnings which do not affect the functionality of the board.
I think I’m done. I redid the entire case and added a better usb cutout. I also made sure to measure the case better this time. I updated github and ready to submit again.
I started soldering the microcontroller to the pcb board. I struggled a little because I only had one experince in soldering before but I think I got through it pretty alright. I also started placed the diodes into the pcb and will solder them later.
I finally finished soldering everythung. Im really nervous about whether it will work or not but I’m happy with how it turned out. I really like the usb cutout and it looks exactly as I had imagined. I wish I wouldve designed the oled screen cutout a little better but overall it looks good....

This was one of my longest recorded working sessions (I paused it a lot) and this is part 1/2 of my recordings. First, I started working on the holes for the neopixel hole placement on CAD for each cube and copy pasted each sketch (had to adjust + extrude each face individually) after measuring so that the neopixels could slide into place and be visible, but also left enough room via a few chamfers so that the wires could go out to the electronics + so that possible the backs of the LEDs could be attached (via glue, tape?) and stay in place. Next I worked on cleaning up the edges for easy printing. This included adding edges for the bottom rows so that I could later make a slider for acrylic walls. Later, I diverted and went to work on the BOM; this made me realize (along with talking to a few people) that I should also make the schematic before I order the parts to solder with. I began that after mostly completing the BOM, leaving a the cost of a few cost-dependent items for later. The schematic includes around 54 neopixel LEDs that I’ll probably have to redo the footprints for, since they aren’t the exact ones that I’ll be working with. However, the ESP32 works as of now. I then went back to the CAD. All that was left was to insert screw holes and slider columns for possible acrylic walls. I cut out a few holes according to a few Home Depot screws I found (four, one for each corner) and made them so that they would connect to the bottom walls. I then created the sliders with probably a larger tolerance than necessary (since I am not the one printing, just in case things go wrong). I think I am going to submit my project early so I can continue schematic work later while waiting for parts to arrive!"}, {"post_id": 18447, "ts": "2026-06-29T16:38:17Z", "hours": 4.1286, "text": "CAD Modelling + More Research on Parts This devlog is being created unfortunately a significant time after recording (maybe a day and night cause I thought the recording was lost then I was busy the entire day :C) But basically I began with more research; I’m aiming to submit my project ASAP so I can quickly get the funding to build it, even if not fully complete! (All on my general recordings sheet, where I write down all of my ideas/general summaries/to-do lists corresponding to my project progress!) The CAD began as well; I needed to take some measurements of the LEDs. I landed on a 5’‘x5’’ design before ultimately switching to a 6’‘x6’’ (for easier divisibility, and to make an awesome MEGA CUBE!!!) I began with mapping out a 3x3 cube and extruding by 0.2 inches on both sides, before ultimately filleting each side by 0.2 so that each cube would have this kinda cool elevated design! I then started cutting out inserts for the LEDs and filleting the insides (to easily insert the LEDs)… but then I realized I did the conversions wrong (Imperial units am I right 💀) soo had to redo all of that… then researched 3D printing on JLCPCB… I’d need to choose a fast delivery option to get it in time :( I really hope I do! But I need to add supports ASAP, and lock in to ship as soon as able… thank you for reading and any feedback/tips are greatly appreciated!!"}, {"post_id": 17048, "ts": "2026-06-27T17:54:58Z", "hours": 1.1964, "text": "Part 1/2: CAD Drawings Started the CAD drawings; however, so far, I only have the idea for the walls and unfortunately… I don’t think the locking mechanism is what I had in mind :( Every time I’ve drafted a ‘sliding and locking’ (basically it slides and locks into place so it doesn’t move up), after 30 minutes I look at it again and realize it won’t work as I’d like it to… so I turned to a few friends to ask their opinions. I got the response that Idea 1 would work way better than 2 (2 was scrapped because I realized it wouldn’t lock) then I looked and revised 1. However, a friend suggested I do an elongated dove tail joint. So, I’ll try a CAD of both (if I have time) and see if which works better. So far, I still have to add measurements, revise the ideas, revise the whole drawing (sobs).. etc. I’m very grateful for you guys helping me out with the ideas, thank you! Anyway, the image attached has my planning doc. These are my thoughts as a researched the cube and how I would even approach it. Ultimately, I came up with two solutions: Solution 1: a CAD rubik’s cube with holes in each of the 54 cubes (for the leds) that wouldn’t move; either 1 : It would be controlled via a switch or turning the cube (difficult with wires; looked into slip rings and that probably wouldn’t work) 2 : A coded controller (a random software controller OR, if there’s the allotted time for it, an actual physical controller!) that registers user moves and responds thru the LEDs!! Solution 2: A 4x4 display (or any square screen) and I would need 6 of them for each cube side. The cube wouldn’t turn, rather (the displays would also be touchscreen) the user would slide up or swipe on a row (I would program a 3x3 cube display for each side) and that would move the cube w/moving animations! I think I’ll be building a PCB via perfboard/perma proto-board… after Outpost, I’ll definitely work on replacing this with an actual printed PCB made in KiCad!!
Part 1/2: CAD Drawings Started the CAD drawings; however, so far, I only have the idea for the walls and unfortunately… I don’t think the locking mechanism is what I had in mind :( Every time I’ve drafted a ‘sliding and locking’ (basically it slides and locks into place so it doesn’t move up), after 30 minutes I look at it again and realize it won’t work as I’d like it to… so I turned to a few friends to ask their opinions. I’ve learned a lot more about joints than I knew before!! (The fully black joint that has only a bit of red in the drawing is the newly revised idea1). Short journal now yes, but part 2 hopefully will have a loooot more details.
CAD Modelling + More Research on Parts This devlog is being created unfortunately a significant time after recording (maybe a day and night cause I thought the recording was lost then I was busy the entire day :C) But basically I began with more research; I’m aiming to submit my project ASAP so I can quickly get the funding to build it, even if not fully complete! But I need to add supports ASAP, and lock in to ship as soon as able… thank you for reading and any feedback/tips are greatly appreciated!!
CAD Modelling Finish + Starting PCB + Starting BOM Hello! I think I am going to submit my project early so I can continue schematic work later while waiting for parts to arrive!
(wrote this a while later) Basically did work on the README and also updated my BOM!! This was a few days ago, so around now I should have all of my stuff shipped! Super excited. Also reorganized my documentation so it looks cleaner and included many images and the process in the journal.md + readme of my Github!...
