For this project, I designed my Royalpad from start to finish, including the schematic, PCB, and CAD model. I had to do multiple revisions of the schematic since I def messed up a lot and my connections were partially incorrect, but I referenced the hackpad guide and Joe Scotto’s guide for designing a keyboard in KiCAD so that helped me with finishing the schematic. I checked the connections afterwards to make sure the circuit was set up properly before moving on to the PCB. Next, I designed the PCB using the schematic as a guide. I arranged the components on the board in a way that I liked/made sense and routed the traces to connect everything together. I tried to keep the layout organized while making sure the components and connections fit properly. Once I was happy with the layout, I finished the PCB design and imported all my 3D models so I could actually see everything on my board lol. I got a few DRC errors but I fixed those up since they were mainly in relation to errors in the schematic and incorrect usage of 5V for the OLED screen. Finally, I worked on the CAD model for the macropad enclosure. I’m decently experienced with SOLIDWORKS, so it was pretty chill. I designed the case to fit the PCB and give the macropad a proper finished look with tuff triangle cutouts for an aesthetic appeal. I considered how the board and the enclosure would fit together so that the components could be assembled into one device. With the schematic, PCB, and CAD all completed, the main design work for Royalpad is finished! My next step is to finish my repo, humbly ask for funding (pls) and assemble after I receive the kit to test the macropad and make sure everything works as expected. Although this dev log shows roughly 16 minutes of work, I can assure that this took a LOT more than that, I simply forgot to use Lapse and record all my work 😭.
