Right now it has one command: /game, and pressing on “enter answer” opens a Discord Modal. It is able to check for syntax errrors, invalid operations, disallowed numbers, etc.
Added scoring to the 24-game bot. It keeps track of player’s score in a leaderboard that is shown in the end. Also, I added a parameter to the slash-command that lets you specify how many rounds to play the game for. Currently a bug where the timeout gets delayed by up to 30 seconds, not sure if it’s my wifi’s issue or some sort of inefficiency in my code…
Added the timer option to the slash command. Also made data fetching asynchronous in order to avoid stalling the bot.
I found some workarounds to the laggy HTTP requests that the Discord API makes. The timeout kept getting delayed by 10-20 seconds at certain sequences due to failed requests, which made the bot hard to use. I decided to implement a single global timer that persists across all game objects in order to manage the timeout, preventing users from getting more time than they should to answer a round.

What changed this ship: the performance. After starting out with a score of a measly 47/100 for performance. I managed to almost double it in the end to 88/100 . It is, of course, still not close to perfect, but considering this is using react I am pretty happy. (That is why my personal site uses SolidJS and scores in the high 90s) The theoretical ceiling for raw load times in this case would not be much higher. Unfortunately #nest where I am hosting the demo makes it impossible to actually use some of the performance optimizations I have added (like gzip compression for html,js, etc.) Query Caching This is another performance optimization I have started using. Often used routes cache their api returns to make sites load almost instantly. I am still working on this, but won’t have time to completely finish this before hackclub ends. Devlogs:
I added a shop managment panel and am currently working on adding shop item variants so users can e.g. select different colors for an item As always the backend is way nicer to work with than the frontend. I hate react
I finished the new shop item variant system. Admins can now create new options on already existing items or create new items with multiple options. I also updated the item buying page to let the user select (see below)
added a little “My orders” page so participants can have a look at their orders
I started redesigning and refactoring the review panel. The previous UI was AI generated and looked bad. To be quite honest I don’t really like the Jus’Study theme so far so I tried making the best of it with the review panel and actual put some thought into the design. In the next couple of days I will try to add some more features as well to make the update not only cosmetic. I might look into AI for this in the future, but I find my human-written code to be more aesthetic (when I am trying atleast)
Today I finished up the review redesign and added a project-lock feature. I have never been so frustrated with React like today. The dialog you can see in the screenshot was a pain to get working using the <dialog> tag. React for some reason doesn’t implement the button attributes necessary for opening and closing dialogs without javascript. And the way state is controlled for dialogs in React sucks and I had to use refs.
Time tracking rework and Hackatime OAuth Integration I am currently reworking the entire way time is tracked for jus’study. Beforehand the time was tracked in the devlog database table. This now introduces a bunch of problems if you want to for example alter that data. Because of that the idea is to move to a design that I call “time ledger”. Basically any “event” like adding a devlog adds a duration (can be negative to subtract). This way it is way more extensible. Oh yeah and I made an integration for hackatime oauth. Right now I am trying to write sql-migrations so that I can migrate to the new database schema without deleting everything.
Time tracking rework - Part 2 this was basically changing all the old code out to work with the new time entries. I will have to figure out a cleaner way to get time per ship. but for now it works.
API Docs I annotated the about 50 api routes and setup Scalar to show the api docs
Regional Pricing in Shop I am not finished yet but well as I forgot to log before 10h I guess I will have to post an update. I am currently finishing up regional pricing as a new feature for the shop. This way we will be able to change pricing depending on the regions products get shipped to.
Regional Pricing in Shop Pt.2 I finished up the regional pricing thing. It was mostly just refactoring the frontend and getting yelled at by error messages.
Slack Bot Integration and some other stuff
Bug fixing because human slop also creates bugs. There were bugs to let users change their balance, typos, race-conditions etc.
Yet more backend fixes Learning no. 1 of the day: Writing safe database queries with no race-conditions is really hard. Most of the fixes today where fixing some database/transaction related things. I also added a way to validate environment variables on start up since with the sheer amount of variables now it seems necessary. I am really happy with my current “use AI to review” workflow. I am actually learning quite a bit about how transactions work etc.
Observability Overhaul I am not finished yet, but I am overhauling the entire observability structure. It is way overkill for this small ysws but I wanted to try anyway. The observability stack will now use OpenTelemetry with Grafana Alloy as a Collector. That then gets forwarded to Loki, Prometheus and Tempo. This will enable fancy traces and super cool metrics.
Finishing touches and making it deploy.
Added project banners and an explore page also fixed a bunch of bugs and inconsistencies
Performance improvements (see images for before and after) I am nowhere close to finished with these improvements but the time improvements are massive. From speed index 10.2s to 2.0s added caching and compression for nginx image compression (thanks to the ship feedback) font preloading in html
Double the performance scores than Stardance! (see images) NOTE TO THE NEST DEVS: Please give us users back access to Caddyfile . My whole file compression thing doesn’t work because I don’t have access. Our blocking times are down to <100ms . That IS FAST . (Stardance has about 11x that) Oh and once you are actually on the site, performance gets better too! I have implemented preloading and caching for most of the often visited parts of the site! How I actually achieved this: optimizing (pre)loading of images and fonts optimizing js bundle size and splitting the bundle into chunks self-hosting fonts and not relying on google optimizing svg sizes Things I had to do to achieve this that were not fun at all: upgrade my react-router to version 8. This was a pain.
Gotta go fast. This final devlog was mainly QoL improvements a lot in terms of performance updates. I also updated the README and did some other nice things. Have a look at the recent devlogs for further infortmation.
Ships:
Getting everything to work on Nest as a demo was tricky but I hope it works now. The biggest challenge by far was getting everything to a production-level grade. I have never had a project that would have many users so adding observability etc. was something new
Final ship for Stardance. Please don’t mind the lack of items in the demo shop. I am already working on the production deployment and therefore did not want to waste too much time on the demo here. Conclusion: frontend sucks...

I finished the base of the whole project im doing via electron when im out of school it’ll be published considering how my school blocks github
Published my very first version of aion its live on GitHub right now (only in Mac OS format as I use a Mac I will compile a exe version soon dw) I added a block list to block common ad associated domains
I finished the initial window system inside the app im gonna finish the minimize and maximize buttons tommorrow
ive finished the final ui after like 2 hours ToT I still need a few more hours to hook everything up and then it should be ready for shipping!!
I’ve finished the entire project its ready for shipping here’s an early beta picture (sorry I never released it)
I finished fixing the online webs version so it should be good nowww hopefully its better now (it has inconsistances that are out of my control that have to do with websites preventing me from using built in simulated windows)
ive just finished a small part of my project for web os 2.0 ive added the ability for the “Start menu” to close I plan on adding this to the desktop app version soon
Ships:
the inital window dragging capability was something ive never had to code before this is actually my first time working with electron but I hope to do more with this! I think electron is capable of installing chrome extensions so I think those are installable aswell, multiple windows are draggable which is useful for multitasking when needed you can resize them in both the webos version and in the desktop client I do hope to build more in the future the source code is in the “anion.zip” folder if you wanna read it or something (I just noticed the bug where the buttons on the html version just open wikipedia I had Claude recompile the code I made into a single html so its probably more buggy but in the client it works normally (at least on Mac OS))...

The game world will be a randomly generated 200x200 tile map. There is also must consider collision detection, camera offset calculations, and performance optimization. The most challenging part of creating Pycraft was learning Pygame because Pygame is not as efficient of a language as GDScript and it is not a game engine so it is not as easy to visualize it like in Godot which I am used to. I am most proud of the random terrain generation as it feels the game feel refreshing each time. But I realized that it would be risky since it could easily break when put in a bag if dropped or swung around, and it would be hard to carry around for him. It would also need specific directions to use it the way I built it. So to save him the hassle, I decided to keep it and just give him a gift card. Features: Tall body - this wasn’t intended, I sort of just started building and it came out like this. A switch with a rubber band lock - this needed some really good adjustment so it isn’t too hard to activate and isn’t too easy to activate. A battery holder - it took me some time to brainstorm and come up with the idea to add a rubber band lock A door to access the battery with a rubber band lock A plastic propellor - I also considered cardboard and badminton feathers but I thought that plastic would meet in the middle and be simple but also lightweight. Honestly, rubber bands and hot glue really carried this and help me so much. Challenges Time constraint: since this originally intended for my friend’s birthday, it forced me to lock in and finish quick so this was nice. Switch headaches: a lot of the times when the fan wouldn’t spin, it had something to do with the switch not making contact when locked so I had to adjust that many times. Motor wire to foil detachment - the motor wire one time came out of the foil so I had to open up the thing and remove hot glue and stuff to fix that. I reinforced it with a ton of hot glue. I think the fact that I was able to make something cool and work on it without giving up is something to be proud of. It’ll be nice to have this nice sitting on my shelf to remind me of the little things I can do that build up over time."}]...
