Finished backend and frontend connection.
Added an OCR feature to allow handwritten text to be used. I also updated the user-query feature by allowing the user to select their own settings for the RAG pipeline. Moreover, I was able to allow the user to upload files and improved the UI to make it look better.

So nothing special right now, just a basic WebOS. So far 90% of my coding time has been debugging the dragging & open/close features. TwT thanks Dad.
Small update: Just have the window up, still working on functionality & stuff
Notes are working! Notes are working and I can create more, however JavaScript is still being mean and not letting me make a full initilization function so the code’s not as optimized as I’d like yet. :’>
The ZenApp has been implimented. Planning on adding a couple more sections there. Also started to change the notes color scheme, however the functionality broke, not fun, looking at it right now.
NovaOS devlog #5 Notes still aren’t working T-T New section added to ZenApp: “Full about”, just tells you a little more about me!
NovaOS Devlog #6 Finally got notes working again! There was just a small typo TwT also changed the color scheme to be a little more like the app icon.
NovaOS Devlog #7 Finally fixed the headers, now they’re bugging me in a different way. Added a slight transparency to the welcome window for funsies. going to start working on the buggy selection stuff so things actually rise to the top when you click on them.
NovaOS Devlog #8 Windows now can come to top when clicked! App icons get an outline to show they are selected/open, and opening/closing has been semi-optimized. (initWind still isn’t working, but I am working on it.)
NovaOS Devlog #9 Window initilization has been optimized! Yay! currently working on getting windows to stay open between reloads.
NovaOS Devlog #10 Windows now stay open and where you put them between page reloads! Pages reset, however I’m working on it.
Ships:

I made a WebOS that is themed around calculators. From naming to what apps do, I tried to take inspiration from how calculators do it. Features: Ability to have multiple windows of the same app (done through IDs and cloning HTML) The Operator: a calculator and search bar that controls the operating system (click the mouse-following calculator icon in the top left) Live math evaluation in the Operator/calculator (thanks to math.js) Ability to search for apps in the Operator Window management through the four basic operator icons (+, -, ×, ÷) in the middle of the top bar Calculation history storage via localStorage The Root app: a file explorer for browsing calculation history and installed apps For the second ship, I want to add functionality to the M+ button in the top bar, so that it shows clipboard history and current open windows. Roadblocks: Module scoping for the JavaScript files was probably the most annoying thing in the project. Functions defined in type=“module” scripts were invisible to onclick attributes in HTML, so a ReferenceError would occur every time a button was clicked. It took me so long to figure out that you had to expose functions via window.functionName. Another issue I had was with my window manager system. I had to add ID’s to every duplicated window (since apps can have multiple windows open). This got really frustrating because every time I wanted to edit attributes of a certain window using JavaScript, I needed that window ID. The logic for retrieving that ID took me a while to figure out. Proud Of: Though that window manager that caused me so many bugs, I am so proud of how it turned out. Figuring out the logic for it took a long time, but it was mostly fun. I’m also proud of how I handle new apps. Instead of having to add all that app’s code into index.html or having to change a ton of JavaScript to account for that new app, my project automatically accounts for new apps based on .html files in the “apps” folder. Devlog 02 - All the windows you want It’s been way too long since my previous devlog. I created an “apps” folder in my project to store HTML files, and each file contains a single div that holds an entire app. This setup should simplify developing more apps in the future since all I have to do is create an html file in that folder. Then, I will on the calculator search menu that will eventually control the entire operating system. Still not completely sure how that’s going to work though.
Devlog 03 - FINALLY the MATH Finished Last time, I said I was going to make more apps before I do the calculator. However, the calculator seemed way more fun than random math-related apps, so that’s exactly what I worked on. As you can see in the images, you can now do math in the calculator searchbar thingy (still need a name for it), and you can search for apps. Next This time, for real, I’m going to make more apps. I’m probably going to start with a file explorer that shows previous math calculations as files. After I’m done making a couple of apps, I’ll work on the clipboard (the M+ button from my previous devlogs). Once both of those are done, the OS should be ready to ship, and for my second ship of the OS, I want to make the math store and add customization.
Devlog 04 - Browse your FILES Finished I wrote instructions on how to use the operating system in the Welcome app. Also, as I said I will last time, I made an app. It’s called Root because “root directory” and the math term “root”. It’s not the best name ever, but it’s good enough. Speaking of names, for the calculator/search thingy, I picked the name Operator cause it controls a lot of the OS. Next Up Now, I’m going to ship this OS. Then, I’ll work on the M+ button (the clipboard manager and app switcher for the operating system), the math store idea where you can download apps for different math things, and a settings app for customization.
Devlog 05 A pretty small devlog today. Just got the M+ button working with the currently open windows. The problem with the clipboard history is that I have to get website permission from the user to do that. I don’t really know how to do that, so I’ll work on that either later today or tomorrow.
Devlog 06 Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the clipboard history to come up in the M+ panel. Instead, I made a system stats counter (image one). I know, it’s not as useful and it has some pretty lame stats right now. I can’t fix the useful part, but I will try to make the stats more fun/interesting by the next devlog (which hopefully won’t take a week this time). Anyway, I also started working on the settings app (image two). The “update” buttons don’t do anything right now, but they will soon. Thank you for reading through this devlog and have a great day!!
Devlog 07 So I might have gotten sidetracked from the settings app cause it’s such a boring app to work on. Instead, I started working on the unit circle/calendar app. I thought it would be a good idea to combine those two to make the calendar app interesting. However, since there are 365 days and only 360 degrees, I’m going to combine 6 days (probably the week of pi day) into one SUPER PI DAY or some other name. To draw the circle, I’m using an HTML canvas element. I’m learning that it’s actually a really cool element, but obviously not as cool as a div element.

Hi everyone! Thank you for going through my ship and have a great day!!...

Besides, many of them produced negative values for the entropy, which, as I have previously alluded, is acceptable for a heuristic function , but not for the entropy calculation my program promises. I was more open to this discrepancy before, but the improvements I was seeing (if they actually were improvements) were not worth the change. Thus, I decided to write up a README, publish to crates.io, and call it a day. I may come back with more tweaks in the future, but for now, I think the performance is acceptable. (Nevertheless, you can find the data from all of my benchmarking trials in the repository.)"}, {"post_id": 24127, "ts": "2026-07-07T14:25:28Z", "hours": 3.4336, "text": "I removed the regular expressions from the Rust program, and it did seem to speed things up a little bit, but the unoptimized builds still took a few seconds to run. I couldn’t really think of any other optimizations that weren’t either a pain to implement or unlikely to work, so I ultimately decided just to run my script with the release build and wait. Thankfully, I seriously overestimated how long the benchmarking would take; it got through 1900-odd Hangman games in under 10 minutes. I wrote up a second quick script (not included in the repository) to test my old Hangman solver, but as this was in Python, calling code I wrote months ago, with only half-hearted attempts at optimization, that bit of benchmarking took hours to run. It really shouldn’t have, but at the time I decided I’d rather simply be patient than to actually figure out what was wrong. I had the results the next morning, so I put everything into some CSV files, whipped up a quick bit of Matplotlib code, and looked at how my new Rust program compared with my old Python program. To my satisfaction, the Rust program generally used less guesses overall than the Python program did. However, the programs were rather similar in the number of incorrect guesses they made, with the Python version beating the Rust one by a slim margin. This, arguably, is the more important metric for Hangman; there isn’t really a limit on how many guesses you make in Hangman, only how many wrong guesses you make. The results were nevertheless unsurprising. My Rust program, after all, attempts to optimize the information gained. The Python program attempts to play safely, though often at the cost of using more guesses overall. The Rust program is a little more willing to guess a rarer letter because it knows that absence of that letter still gives you information. This may be something we want to discourage. My plan is to open up a new branch in my repository and see if I can tweak the entropy calculations to make the algorithm a little more wary of incorrect guesses. I suppose that this would make the “entropy” more of a custom heuristic than true Shannon entropy, which reduces the program’s transparency, but I think the potential strategic gains are worth the tradeoff."}, {"post_id": 21920, "ts": "2026-07-04T03:19:00Z", "hours": 3.2522, "text": "As I was working on my benchmarking script, I found that the program is currently much too slow to play up to 2000 full games of Hangman in a reasonable amount of time, even when compiled with full optimizations. Perhaps compiling regex with the regex crate can get expensive, or perhaps there is some suboptimal use of memory within my code I overlooked. The word list is just under 200,000 words long, and while processing that much data doesn’t take all that long, minor inefficiencies are probably magnified a good bit. I may try swapping out the regular expressions for a custom, domain-specific pattern matching algorithm; however, the performance I’ve observed does seem to depend heavily on the calculations that occur after pruning. The program, after all, does get faster when the state is more restrictive. hangstop \"?????????\" takes about 3.5 seconds with the unoptimized build, since there are tens of thousands of nine-letter words in the dictionary; hangstop \"???ee????\" -i \"nl\" takes less than half the time (albeit still far more time than I would prefer). One particular challenge that comes with optimization is the fact that there is little benefit to precomputing anything. The program, as I have said in previous devlogs, is stateless, and it only makes one guess at a time, so it doesn’t spend any more time using data that it does generating it. Besides ditching regex, I may also experiment with lazy evaluation, or find something else to micro-optimize. :)"}, {"post_id": 20432, "ts": "2026-07-02T00:54:43Z", "hours": 1.6753, "text": "Put the finishing touches on the CLI and fixed some little bugs. To the best of my knowledge, I have correctly implemented a search for the letter with the highest entropy given a certain game state. Whether this method is effective is quite another matter. It does seem to be performing decently well for many words - it got “crustacean” after guessing e , s , r , and a . (The program will output the solution immediately as soon as it has eliminated all other candidate words.) “Rusty,” meanwhile, took 13 guesses, 11 of which were wrong. Devlogs:
Began a new little side project. About a year ago, I wrote a Python app to suggest Hangman guesses. It was simple but surprisingly effective, especially for medium-to-long words. Its obvious weakness was shorter words, especially those under six letters long. I am going to attempt to improve the algorithm using some information theory and Rust magic. I also decided to make this a command line tool, as opposed to the original GUI, since Hangman works elegantly when thought of as a stateless game. Right now, I just wrote up some boilerplate code and passed all the tests.
Wrote the bulk of the information-theory-heavy code. I started by writing a function that takes a letter and a potential solution and returns a bitmask representing which spaces would be uncovered. For instance, get_bitmask('a', "banana") would give you 010101 , since there are As at the 1st, 3rd, and 5th indices. Then I wrote a second function which, given a letter and a word list, returns the Shannon entropy, or the expected bits of information, of that letter. This involves counting the occurrences of every bitmask in the word list and taking a weighted sum of the number of bits gained. For instance, if my letter was e and my word list was [hello, lends, flees, stick] , the bits of information you could expect to obtain from guessing e is p(01000) * log2(1 / p(01000)) + p(00110) * log2(1 / p(00110)) + p(00000) * log2( 1 / p(00000)) , which equals 1.5. Obtaining the bitmask for a given letter and a given word of length l is O(l) . Thus, calculating the entropy of a given letter for a certain word list of length n is O(n * l) . Calculating the entropy for every one of r remaining letters is O(n * l * r) . Since no English words are longer than a few dozen letters and there cannot be more than 26 remaining letters, determining the best letter to guess should be roughly linear with respect to the number of possible words. A few hundred thousand words through a linear-time algorithm should be nothing for Rust, but we will see whether my dubious asymptotic notation skills are supported by the final result. :) Unfortunately, there is not much to see in the screenshots I’ve been attaching; I use test-driven development and make sure my logic is reasonably sound before I even touch the UI, thus the rather boring images of passed unit tests.
Put the finishing touches on the CLI and fixed some little bugs. This was no better than my original, naïve program. In some cases - though perhaps they are unlucky cases - the old Python program did significantly better. HangStop took 7 guesses (4 of which were wrong) to uncover “punctuation,” while the Python program only used 4, 1 of which was wrong. This problem deserves a bit of automated testing to ensure I am not subconsciously cherry-picking examples. :) My next step is going to be to write a script to hammer both the Rust CLI tool and the Python backend of my old project with thousands of words and determine whether “count the letters” is really beating the fancy information theory I championed. (As exemplified by the egregious use of DFS in my previous Rust project, one may easily see that I have a bit of a tendency to over-engineer things.)
As I was working on my benchmarking script, I found that the program is currently much too slow to play up to 2000 full games of Hangman in a reasonable amount of time, even when compiled with full optimizations. The program, after all, does get faster when the state is more restrictive. hangstop "?????????" takes about 3.5 seconds with the unoptimized build, since there are tens of thousands of nine-letter words in the dictionary; hangstop "???ee????" -i "nl" takes less than half the time (albeit still far more time than I would prefer). :)
I removed the regular expressions from the Rust program, and it did seem to speed things up a little bit, but the unoptimized builds still took a few seconds to run. I suppose that this would make the “entropy” more of a custom heuristic than true Shannon entropy, which reduces the program’s transparency, but I think the potential strategic gains are worth the tradeoff.
After fiddling around with various parameters in the entropy function and benchmarking the results, I decided that any benefits I might find were too small to warrant very much of my time looking for them. (Nevertheless, you can find the data from all of my benchmarking trials in the repository.)
Ships:
HangStop is a blazingly fast Rust CLI tool for determining which letter will yield the most information in a game of Hangman. It uses Shannon entropy to determine the guess and is heavily inspired by Grant Sanderson’s (3Blue1Brown) video on Wordle and information theory ( https://www.3blue1brown.com/lessons/wordle/ ). It is also intended to be a new, revisited version of an old Python program I wrote. More details about the original project are included in the README, but for reviewing purposes, the original project should NOT be considered a component of this one. HangStop can be installed with a single command from crates.io....

Today I started working on my Web OS project. So far, I have spent 26 minutes on it. In this session, I mainly focused on the basic building stage of the project.I began by setting up the main structure of the Web OS and planning how the interface will be organized. I worked on the basic layout and started building the foundation that the rest of the system will be added onto later. At this stage, the work was mostly focused on starting the project, organizing the code, and building the basic framework rather than adding advanced features. This was an important first step because it helped create a starting point for future development and gave me a clearer idea of how I want the Web OS to look and function.
In this update, I successfully built and integrated two major system utilities into the core desktop environment: a Settings application and a Calendar . The Settings app introduces real time workspace customization by implementing an input interface that captures image link addresses and immediately binds them to the document body’s style property, allowing users to switch out the global background wallpaper instantly. Alongside this, I added a calendar component.
I expanded the WebOS environment by developing two primary user application layers: an optimized Images explorer and a data-handling Notes . The Images app introduces a gallery layout displaying wildlife and animal photo within a grid component framework. Both components integrate with the global window architecture, maintaining active content inputs without losing interface synchronization.
To make the environment feel like a functional desktop rather than just a stylized landing page, I built two new core applications into the system dock: a working Calculator utility and a dedicated “About Me” panel. For the calculator, instead of relying on basic, insecure evaluation tools, I structured an inline string compiler using strict execution rules to handle chained arithmetic expressions smoothly, mapping the interface out onto a clean button matrix. Alongside it, the “About Me” window serves as the primary personalization node for the OS, using custom CSS flex badges to cleanly highlight my background. Everything is feeling incredibly cohesive now.
finally completed the project!!
working on css!
more progress :)

I built WebOS, a browser-based desktop simulation featuring draggable windows, a live calendar, a notes editor, a calculator, and a dynamic wallpaper settings app. The biggest hurdle was engineering the window and keeping the midnight calendar updates lightweight, but I’m proud of how the system mimics a native desktop experience. To test it, click the dock or desktop icons to launch applications, drag the windows by their headers, and try pasting a web image link into the settings app to change the wallpaper on the fly....

One new challenge, new world and a basic menu! You can clearly see the menu is not finished. The world needs some changes, but I will do it only if i have time. GAMBLING This challenge is just random (as the name might suggest). Slot machine spawns on your screen. You have 5% to just die. That’s it, because gambling is bad or something idk. World-1 I called it 1 because I thought there will be more… There is no way, maybe in later patches… Not on this hackclub project. I think it looks good. The paralax layers (sky and forest) looks awesome. It is not hard, as intended. The player (you :D) has to choose the challenges to make it hard. Challenges Menu I’m using saves, so even if you close the app (or browser in this case, because it will be aviable on itch.io) your highscore will be saved! Even the challenges configuration will, so you dont have to change it every time you go back to menu. A lot minor changes So in this 6h I’ve made so much things, but those were major ones! I hope you like it!"}, {"post_id": 78805, "ts": "2026-10-11T17:26:26Z", "hours": 1.8358, "text": "New Challenges So today I’ve made 2 unique things. Lagging and Flashlight Mode. Am I proud of those two? Yes! (and no!) I’ve tried to beat the game on every challenge turned on… It’s quite… uhh “almost humanly impossible”. So my debug world takes 8 seconds to beat without anything… With everything I beat it once. Lagging So I’ve added lagging to my game because it was too smoth… Of course I’m kidding and the lags are not permament. It can randomly show and limit your fps (depends on level of lag) for 0.5s - 2.5s. It also gives a cool screen effect. Flashlight Mode Happy Spooky Month! Sooo… I’m not that proud of myself here. The idea is REALLY ANNOYING and not really fun. I’ve added it anyways. Move your mouse to see - that’s it. I’ve used (someone else’s) shader to make it. You can still see the cats because it would be impossible for sure (Trust me, I’ve tried). Now you have to operate with your mouse WHILE STILL PLAYING the platformer part. Woooo Spooky Month. Background I’ve made background using 5 paralaxes. I think it looks awesome! It was quite annoying to set up all 5 layers but I’ve somehow did it! Small Summary When I was creating this project I wasn’t sure if it is a good idea. Now I see that it (almost) is! The challenges are unique and most of them are silly. Your sprite now does a lot of random animations, flips etc. It might be a bit distracting, but it wont kill you. Is it all??? NOPE Of course not. I hope I’ll be able to finish it (I have less than 2 weeks…) Anyways: In case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night! (wherever you are)
Ultimate Custom Platformer Hiii again ! I’m back with some new features! I hope you like it!...

Devlogs:
So far I’ve written the engine for this project, which initializes and draws to a canvas element, as well as an editor ( https://bennet.tgreenhagen.com/editor/ ), some pieces that can be used to build levels and some of the campaign levels.
I did some behind the scenes work getting it to state where i could publish it on Itch.io and making sure that all the features were working as intended as well as making it automatically resize to maintain pixel size consistency as well as (again) making it work on Itch.
Apparently there was and issue with the level editor that caused it to not render the icons in the UI, so I fixed that. I also wrote the README for the project including information about the project such as the bundler it uses (vite), controls, and documentation on running the app.
I’ve decided to make the game and the editor feel more like one cohesive experience rather than two separate applications, so I’m adding a pause menu as well, and I’m changing the editor to be located at the website’s root rather than being a separate webpage. This will also hopefully make the experience playing the itch.io build of the game better. (note: none of these changes have been published on any public instance of the game yet because there are some unresolved issues with the editor however I have pushed my work from today to GitHub)
Another quick devlog because I fixed some of the issues that existed after the previous one. I also made it so that anyone can enter the editor with any level loaded in it from any level and whenever you get to a new level in the campaign it saves your progress. I know this will cause issues with players not being able to replay the game so I will add a button on the title screen (whenever I get around to making that) for resetting save progress. Oh also I think most if not all of the bugs with movement getting stuck in a certain direction are fixed both in the editor and in game.
I made some improvements to the UI, such as rounded button corners and a outline when hovering a button. I fixed some bugs with both the player and enemy movement and now the enemies are (a bit) more reliable. There’s also now grass that sways in the wind and interacts with the player in the game! Oh and I added a main menu screen. Also had to do some pretty major reworks to how the game loads levels, and I moved all of the code for that to a separate file where I can use it from both the normal levels and the main menu.
I quickly added some hot air balloons, they aren’t in any of the campaign levels but they’re fun to play with in custom levels.
For this update, I worked a lot on cleaning up the code, making sure that there are now significantly less type-check errors present, and overall it’s easier to develop more features in the future. Onto things of actual substance I added though, there are now actual coins inside the lucky blocks scattered throughout the game as well as coins that can be placed directly in levels in the editor! Sometime soon I do plan to add some sort of asset caching system to the main game so that it isn’t trying to fetch assets as you are playing.

The app features a “Daily Discovery Feed” or simply “Discover” page which pulls real-time planetary imagery, descriptions, and cosmic telemetry via live API. It also includes a “Birthday” where users can input any date(Basically their bithday) coordinate to query the exact celestial snapshot NASA’s sensors captured on their birth date. What challenges did i face? Since this was my first project handling APIs and asynchronous calls in Flutter, navigating Future methods and managing state was a big learning curve. The most tiresome challenge was the local image downloader; high-resolution assets initially failed with a system exception because NASA’s raw image URLs contain complex API query strings that corrupted native Android file extensions (creating broken 0B files). I solved this by writing a custom naming filter to strip out the parameters and strictly enforce a clean .jpg tag. I also recently had to migrate my workspace to Linux and re-optimize my production compilation into split architecture targets (v7a and v8a) to bypass GitHub’s 25MB file upload limits. What was i proud of ? I was proud of learning app development and using the knowledge i gained through watching YouTube Tutorial and the things i learned along the way using AI (like Google Notebook LLM ) to Teach me Future and state management in flutter. It was a wonderfull experience . what other people should know to use my project? Highly Technological Background is not needed they should just follow these steps:- Download either ‘app-arm64-v8a-release.apk’ or ‘app-armeabi-v7a-release.apk’ (if the former is not installed) from the repository files. Install it on your Android phone (allow “Unknown Sources” if prompted). Open CosmoGram app to see the live NASA Daily Discovery feed, or switch to the Birthday tab and enter a date like 2004-10-24 to pull a historical cosmic snapshot! Note: If you want to pull down the raw code and build it locally, remember to open ‘Screen.dart’ and replace the placeholder string with your own official NASA API key.", "repo": "https://github.com/tharungowdaanime/CosmoGram", "demo": "https://github.com/tharungowdaanime/CosmoGram/releases/download/v1.0.0/app-armeabi-v7a-release.apk"}]...

Usage of AI Stitch: I used Stitch to get the UI elements of the two pages. It is awesome and simple to use. I described my app, its usage, and how it works, and it gave me the UI pretty fast, which was also awesome. Gemini: In Stitch, if you go to Export, select the pages you want to export, and export in code, it gives you XML code. I pasted this into Gemini and asked what UI elements I could use to achieve this, and I also told it to give me boilerplate code to build upon. Gemini Image Generation: I also used the Gemini image generation model to generate a custom logo for my app. Troublesome Things & Breakthroughs Since this was my first project involving APIs using Flutter, I did get errors using Future and all that. I mainly asked Gemini for help regarding it. Downloading the image was probably the most tiresome part. I watched some YouTube videos and implemented it, but the downloaded images were all 0B and could not be opened. I asked Gemini to help troubleshoot it. The Download Abort Fix: Initially, downloading high-resolution assets threw a critical system exception. The issue was that NASA’s image URLs contain complex API query strings, which corrupted the native file extension. I wrote a file-naming filter to strip out the parameters and strictly enforce a clean .jpg formatting tag. Now, the Android gallery opens the images flawlessly. What I Just Finished After taking a quick rest, I figured out exactly how to set up the app image and the title name natively! I updated the underlying AndroidManifest.xml files to clear out the default development metadata templates. There is also main.dart , which actually runs the app since the void main(){} function is inside that folder.

What did i make : - I built CosmoGram, a dark-themed mobile application using Flutter and Dart that connects directly to NASA’s databases. Note: If you want to pull down the raw code and build it locally, remember to open ‘Screen.dart’ and replace the placeholder string with your own official NASA API key....
