i am working on a new tab and first i searched for some api by nasa but only apod worked the best for me so i decided to use it as a background and whenever a youtube link will be posted, a custom image i have selected will appear as background (that you see in the screenshot) then i added some css to the search bar (i got the search icon from google icons)
i did some modifications to search bar and added news at the bottom using newsdata.io’s api
i added two more news tabs and optimised it a little for phone users
I added a global news heading and some css thats it
i changed the css of search tab and it took me an awful amount of time to get it all aligned as i changed the search icon and used it as a font from google fonts, it’s still a little bit off centred but that’s the best i could do
i got some recommendations to add shortcuts, time, calendar and some fixes as well out of which i have added shortcuts and time and optimised the search function for enter key. It handles all three media types APOD returns (image, direct video, YouTube embed), shows a shimmering square placeholder until the image loads (then the box snaps to the image’s real aspect ratio), scales with vh/vw so it fits any screen, and includes a date picker to browse any day back to 1995. It auto-deploys to GitHub Pages on every push via GitHub Actions, with the API key injected as a secret so it never appears in public code. What was challenging? The Vite demo assets weren’t at the paths the tutorial listed, so I had to find the real locations before anything else. Layout jumps: the first render dumped a full-size image; a forced 4:3 aspect-ratio cropped images and letterboxed videos. The fix (placeholder swap on onload, natural ratios with vh/vw caps) took the most iteration. YouTube links silently break a tag — caught that and switched to iframes with a watch?v= → embed/ conversion. Blank deployed page: forgetting base: ‘/nasa-apod/’ and setting Pages to the wrong source produced 404s that took a full deploy cycle each to diagnose. What are you proud of? The placeholder → aspect-ratio snap: it’s the clean part where the CSS state and JS loading timing combine so the page never jumps or shows a broken frame. Also the error path — response.ok checks surface NASA’s real messages instead of failing silently — and that the whole thing (build, tests via curl, deploy) is verifiable end-to-end. How to test it: Live site: https://himanshu-2010.github.io/nasa-apod/ — no setup needed; it loads today’s image on open. Use the date picker at the top: try 1995-06-16 (the first APOD ever) to confirm past dates, or a known YouTube day like 2019-07-04 to see the iframe branch. Resize/responsive: shrink the window — the strips disappear under 600px and the media box tracks the viewport. Error path: pick a date before 1995-06-16 (the picker’s min blocks it, but hitting the API out of range proves the .catch shows NASA’s message). Local dev: npm install, set VITE_NASA_API_KEY, then npm run dev.", "repo": "https://github.com/himanshu-2010/nasa-apod", "demo": "https://himanshu-2010.github.io/nasa-apod/"}]...

starting the functionality of a blogging/posts system on my site! right now im just getting back into the swing of things with programming (school has made me SO DAMN BURNT OUT OF EVERYTHING FOR THE PAST MONTH!!! AGH!!!), and have implemented a backend route to fetch .md files from a folder on the backend this returns the name and description of the post, which will show up in a list of posts of some sort, they are declared in the first two lines of the md file, the rest is what is displayed in the actual post! im using go for the backend (which is what i used last time i made something with a web backend, it was nice!!) with the gin library, so far, its awesome!!
added the endpoint that fetches the contents of a post! this removes the title and description that is present at the top of the post, returning only the actual contents!!
aaand back to my faaavorite type of programming… web dev…!!! (…. wink wink nudge nudge i dont like webdev :P) but uh.. got a basic navbar going! i think all tailwindcss and svelte knowledge just immediately leaves my brain whenever i don’t use it for more than a day but. it redirects to the other links! it glows based on what page its actually on… its a component… and… yea! the “my thoughts” section will be where all this post/blog stuff whatever will go! still haven’t added that frontend part yet… but that’s a later problem!
got mosttt of the frontend stuff required for the my thoughts section! this includes… cards for each post! wraps nicely if the descriptions have different lengths/different screen sizes, etc the popup for when you open a note! blurs everything behind so you can read it markdown rendering with the marked library! this will take the text from the .md files on the server and render them in html! very awesome library :3 next, i’ll have to probably make some polishes to this ui.. and then hook it up to the backend!!! (i’ll also have to add a few more pieces of metadata to each post, including the date it was created and an optional image to go along with it)
the frontend part of the my thoughts section is now hooked up to the backend! posts are loaded from metadata sent from the server, and the post contents are now also from what is on the server! also did some other minor things like fix newlines not rendering the way i wanted them to with my markdown actually include post date in the metadata of the .md files, just stored as a unix timestamp still have a few more things to do with this feature like allowing there to be actual images from the server for each post, and making the post contents scrollable… which is important…!!!
finishing(?) touches to the my thoughts section! post images can now be served from the backend! posts without an image will have a proper placeholder at some point, but for now… Biribiriuo.webp :P there is now a scrollbar if the contents of the post is big! improved the readability by making the background when a post is open more dark
some tiny tiny little finishing touches! make text not wrap weirdly on the topbar on mobile sort posts in order of newest first (based on the timestamp thing in the metadata) made project cards not overly huge on desktop. it was. really big. oops made it so hovering over buttons on the my thoughts page still has the hover mouse cursor like any other button!! added fl studio to my list of software that i like. i added it to the images folder a long time ago and just … forgot about it i guess?? now.. everything should be good to ship, just gotta deploy the backend on nest! (and i promise ill make cooler stuff later… just getting warmed up… :P)
spent a… while… getting the backend set up on nest.. but now everything is up and running on the domain, and i can easily add new posts via sftp!!! also did some other final things improving the markdown rendering, including line breaks, more heading levels, link underlines, images… etc…!! (which also meant the backend now serves images from a /assets url !!) but with that… im done!!! :D

now this site was a project that i have made in the past, but i updated it to add a new feature where i can post anything that i think! this is fetched from a backend that serves a list of .md files along with metadata, which i can easily add/delete/edit to my hearts content! overall this wasn’t toooo challenging of a project for me, mostly just wanted to make something small quickly to brush up on my programming because i kinda didn’t make anything for the entirety of may… (thanks school)… but it was very fun to work on! excited to update it and add more thoughts as time goes on :3...

Devlogs:
DevLog #1, finished the basics of my WebOS system, nimOS. It’s my first coding project so it took a bit of time to figure everything out and style it how I wanted, but I ended up finishing the clock and date, some stylization, a background image and a regular one, and the ability to drag the window. Looking foward to working on the ability to close out or minimize the windows next, followed with some more stylization with icons and buttons.
DevLog#2, still struggling with code in general, but I managed to add my first app and its own clickable icon, a basic notebook that can save what is written. It was difficult trying to figure out how to make the text box and the draggable window feature work in conjuction with the close button, but I managed alright. I am thinking of adding a simple calculate next. Please let me know what I should add to it or fix, thank you!
DevLog#3, leaned into a different and more contrasting style for the CSS. In addition, I added a calculator app that is fully functioning. Now that all of the code is getting longer it becomes way harder for me to debug properly and quickly, but I find it a lot easier to try and focus specifically on the changes that you made before something went wrong, that way I can go back and see what exactly I coded that might cause an issue to arise. I think this will be my last devlog for this project, and I am going to move into the next part, webOS 2. There I will finish all of the formatting and add a couple more unique apps.
DevLog #4, I had shipped the project and gotten back some great advice about resizing the windows and adding more interesting features into my webOS. So I went to work and added: Resizeable windows, a wallpaper changer, a starting splash screen, a simple little game, draggable icons, a black hole that sucks up any window near it and deletes it and changed up some of the styling. I did encounter a lot of difficulty fixing up nimOS to accomidate these changes, as the icons started to jump around, the splash screen layering didn’t really work at first (neither did the black hole), and it always seemed that when I did in fact finish adding a new feature, I had to spend double the time creating it on debugging it in order to get it to actually work. But I persevered and finally finished. I will be shipping it as soon as possible after this publication.
