It auto-deploys to GitHub Pages on every push via GitHub Actions, with the API key injected as a secret so it never appears in public code. What was challenging? The Vite demo assets weren’t at the paths the tutorial listed, so I had to find the real locations before anything else. Layout jumps: the first render dumped a full-size image; a forced 4:3 aspect-ratio cropped images and letterboxed videos. The fix (placeholder swap on onload, natural ratios with vh/vw caps) took the most iteration. YouTube links silently break a tag — caught that and switched to iframes with a watch?v= → embed/ conversion. Blank deployed page: forgetting base: ‘/nasa-apod/’ and setting Pages to the wrong source produced 404s that took a full deploy cycle each to diagnose. What are you proud of? The placeholder → aspect-ratio snap: it’s the clean part where the CSS state and JS loading timing combine so the page never jumps or shows a broken frame. Also the error path — response.ok checks surface NASA’s real messages instead of failing silently — and that the whole thing (build, tests via curl, deploy) is verifiable end-to-end. How to test it: Live site: https://himanshu-2010.github.io/nasa-apod/ — no setup needed; it loads today’s image on open. Use the date picker at the top: try 1995-06-16 (the first APOD ever) to confirm past dates, or a known YouTube day like 2019-07-04 to see the iframe branch. Resize/responsive: shrink the window — the strips disappear under 600px and the media box tracks the viewport. Error path: pick a date before 1995-06-16 (the picker’s min blocks it, but hitting the API out of range proves the .catch shows NASA’s message). Local dev: npm install, set VITE_NASA_API_KEY, then npm run dev.", "repo": "https://github.com/himanshu-2010/nasa-apod", "demo": "https://himanshu-2010.github.io/nasa-apod/"}]...

First devlog! I completed the main UI and codec detection, next part is gonna take a while, the main function, encoding and decoding. My goal for this is to be easy to use, even for people who aren’t big tech nerds, and likely don’t know the differences between commonly used codecs. You can notice where I’ve pushed users to use some of the simpler functions. As of editing this, none of this still works. I went back to edit my older devlogs because I realised these were annoyingly vague and would probably make shipping harder.
I love CUDA, you love CUDA, we all love CUDA! (except for hardcore AMD fans) For this i’d like to thank reddit and python cuda/nvenc documentation seriously half the time i spent was reading documentation. This entire block here is all i did in this like hour and a half. Here i’ve prepare some of the foundation for when the video actually gets transcoded. This was rather complicated, and I’ve decided to finish this off later, and I’m defining other features so I can lay this out how I want to much more easily later down the line.
I’ve begun to lay out the groundwork for the actual transcoding and compression, here you can see i’m defining functions for future features I’ve planned out, including audio compression and a target file size. The target file size is an important bit, it’s what actually helps make the program feel simpler, like i want it to be. I’ll post actual usage demos once some of those features actually work.
Finished the UI. Drag and drop options and the slider are now functional, altered some descriptions to make them a bit simpler, and I corrected codec detection. This is currently running as a desktop entry, and I also verified this UI works on Windows 11 despite being made for KDE Plasma....
