Devlogs:
Added 1st Choice Branch, worked on storyline, started to work on 2nd choice branch
Finished all the choice, added typewriter function and color function. Changed how I want the text to be displayed when the code is running. Added background music. Made the background audio in Canva
Added GUI to my games, fixed countless errors and bugs, added a loaded screen, Made it so that the buttons are interactive and only popup when the typing is finished. Added more colors to my text. Progress bar for the points.
Currently working on my README for this project and before this I just fix a few things in my code. Added a background music loop that loops the audio forever and then fixed a crash bug
Finished my README and fixed crash bug with typewriter when the window is closed while it is typing
v 1.0.1 is incoming!! What’s New: Switched from the package of playsound to ctypes New SFXs, listen to them in the attachment (After this update rolls out, I will be working on given the user the freedom to customize how they want the game to look) Turn up your sound to listen to the sounds I cut out the parts where I selected options so that I don’t reveal the answers, if you want to try it out your self head over The Ares Horizon Repo
I cleaned up the UI and linked the Solar Sails choice in branch 2 to the ending choice of branch 1. I know I promised that the update after the SFX one would be customization but I want to focus more on the game itself so I would just be adding a Dark and Light mode. And doing more customization options later.
v2.0.0 I think?? What’s New: New Landing minigame!! 3 difficulties The minigame features SPIKES!! Improved GUI Changes: I orginally started building my game on tkinter thinking it would be easy because my rest of the code was build on it, but I was wrong, it was so annoying to work with and caused so many bugs that I decided to switch to pygame I have never worked with pygame before so I ha to learn and then figure out a way to combine tkinter and pygame . Also, pygame is not supported in Python 3.14 so I had to do pip install pygame --ce the community edition I got it to work and I am so proud The video is a bit speed up
Fixed the bug made the buttons disappear if your screen was too small or you weren’t fullscreened
My first ship is finally here, after 3 changes requested, I added a try again screen so the user doesn’t have to through the loading when they try again now it just shows there tries. Thanks for the idea from my first ship.
Devlog #11 !!! What I did: So I switched from ctypes to the pygame audio engine this is so when my game is played on MacOS or Linux it doesn’t throw errors because ctypes is a Windows thing Added a settings menu to control the volume of the background music and the emergency sounds. The user preferences are saved using a .json file Updated my README.md so the instructions to how to play my game on another operating system aren’t broken Thanks to my ship suggestion, I am trying my best to implement those suggestions into my game and have already done so with a few of them!! What might be coming next: I hope that I can add to the settings menu so the user can control how they want the colors to look in the game, so basically full customization.
Devlog #12 !! What I did: So as u guys know I added audio controls in the previous devlog, I made it even better now The settings menu is now in pygame instead of tkinter The slider changes color as the volume is changed (It looks so cool!!!!! ) There is a new “Mute All Sounds” check box Notes: tkinter sucks, I loved it at first it was easy but as my code becomes more complex it just causes unnecessary bugs, so I plan to switch entirely to pygame After I make the switch I can finally publish it to the web so you guys don’t have to download the source code or an .exe file (I was planning to do this, I got many reviews saying that a website would be better, so I am doing that)
Devlog 13 !! What’s New: I added Reset All Settings to default button, to reset every thing to the “Factory Setting” New setting, users can adjust how fast the typewriter writes on the screen If the user passes the mini game and lands successfully, they would unlock the option to just play the minigame instead of have to go through the the whole story again Notes: I promised that I will release web, I tried, failed miserably, so I am just releasing a new .exe I tried everything to pygame , didn’t work out, then tried to host it on noVNC, it acted up to, I finally gave up after 5 hrs of trying, didn’t count that because that was trial and error and not actual coding (although I did had to make and modify my Dockerfile like a 100 times)
Devlog #14 What I did: So after I 2nd ship, I went to AirVenture so no code there, It ruined my streak So I have finally, finally pushed the code on the web by making it entirely pygame then I ran pygbag so it is now finally live on GitHub Pages Proud of myself, there is still some work to do like fixing bugs Notes: My ship rating reasons suggested to add graphics so currently working on that I also have to improve the loading screen, looks like shit The biggest bug was getting the character and line spacing right, funny ik
Devlog #15, this is a big one What i did: So graphics are finally in I would say New hover effects like button glowing CRT lines, I first added them, didn’t go as planned removed em it the felt dead for some reason so added that back again Light mode The major one, improved the mini-game, a lot, it take up the whole screen now instead of just a section like it was earlier, it has added particle effects, and actual landing zone, star backgroud, fuel and velocity control The mini game looks real good but there are some bugs, many I would say I am currently working on fixing sizing issues with GitHub pages, I think pygbag is causing it via my deploy.yml Notes: When the bugs are removed and the sizing issue is fixed I think I will be ready to ship once more
Devlog #16, posting this while at school 🏫 What I did: Fixed bugs in my minigame, there are still some left to resolve Fixed a bug where when you press try again, it put the user directly in the story mode even if they wished to play the mingame Fixed of bug of the emergency glow, it kept glowing after u pressed try again Rewrote parts of code I used AI in Removed and added new comments to make it more clear and not so chaotic Fixed the pygbag sizing issue Last thing, I previously had my setting.json file in the .gitignore for testing purposes and I forgot about it so my settings are what were seen by others instead of the factory settings they should have seen Notes: Fix minigame Optimize for low end devices Possibly add mobile or tablet support?? Make new v3.0.0 releases?? Releases for many OS??

I made my own choice python adventure game where the player takes a high-stake role of a Flight Director at NASA and there objective is to successfully launch, navigate and land a spacecraft on the surface of Mars. To play the game follow the steps in the README. (The game uses Desktop-Based GUI, so it cannot be hosted on clouds and has to run on your local computer). I am proud of how I made it look cinematic and similar to a NASA mission control terminal.
What did you make? I made The Ares Horizon, a Python space adventure game where you play as a NASA Flight Director. Since my last ship, I over-hauled the game by adding a brand-new landing minigame with 3 difficulties, branch-linked storylines, and dynamic custom themes. What was challenging? Ditching Tkinter for Pygame was tough because I had to learn the library from scratch to eliminate bugs. I also successfully added a seamless “Try Again” tracker without long loading screens. What should people know so they can test your project? This PR adds the PlateRecognizerCRNN, which reads text from a cropped license plate image. The detector model finds where the plate is, and this recognizer model is meant to read what the plate says, like ABC123. The model uses a CRNN. That means it combines a CNN and an LSTM. The CNN looks at the plate image and learns visual patterns like edges, curves, and character shapes. Then the LSTM reads those image features from left to right and right to left, so the model can understand the order of the letters and numbers on the plate. It takes a grayscale plate image shaped like 32x128, turns it into 16 left-to-right time steps, and outputs predictions over 37 possible classes: blank, A-Z, and 0-9. I am currently working through the training side of the PR, especially understanding the loss function. This model uses CTC loss, which is new to me. The tricky part is that the model does not directly output ABC123. Instead, it outputs a sequence of guesses with blanks and repeated characters, and CTC helps compare that messy sequence to the correct plate text during training. TDLR: PR #7 is not fully finished yet, but the core recognizer model is now in place. The next focus is understanding and finishing the training loop, CTC loss, and how the model learns from synthetic license plate images."}]...

Today I finished the main machine learning model work for PR #7 on the plate recognizer branch. This PR adds the PlateRecognizerCRNN, which reads text from a cropped license plate image. hi everyone, i started to make the “create your password” page to integrated with the set up with PGP, all the data is stored locally encrypted by the key that the user creates/imports and is never exposed as plain text. starting to work now on the safe storing of sensitive data with predefined categories and tags for easier sharing and storing. i’m continuing to build the backend for the app and adding customization like dark/white mode + adding the possibility to export the pgp keys of the vault allowing to restore it later on after a logout that wipes everything. more info soon....

After changing the pins correctly, the firmware wouldn’t compile and threw a bunch of errors, so I tested adding layers to the standard firmware QMK autogenerates. Devlogs:
Spent two untracked hours begining working before realizing that Hackatime was not linked and fixing that issue (tutorial) . Found a different guide to making mechanical keyboard PCBs with KiCAD that was way easier to follow and got this made! I am not sure how close the edge of the PCB should be to the USB-C port on the XIAO, so I may adjust that later. Other than that, I think the PCB is finished!
Designed the case for the macropad in Autodesk Fusion. Not sure what the cutout should be for the rotary encoder or LED, so I may need to change that if I figure out a better guess. Discovered Lapse for tracking time, which made it much easier to track time instead of finding plugins that don’t seem to be working.
Coded all the keys for the macropad! It is my first time coding in C, so we’ll see how many semicolons I missed later… I used several other tutorials that were not linked to in Hack Club guides. Setting up QMK Layers Macros
Moved the PCB edge to flush with the edge of the USB-C port, added the corresponding hole in the case, and added some text to the case. I also began the compiling process and ran into a whole bunch of errors and missed semicolons… In the code that I am testing, all but one of the errors is fixed! I don’t understand the correct syntax for switching layers, and code in a different file is a ‘statement with no effect.’
I think the firmware is finished! The QMK docs were difficult for me to understand, and I ended up following parts of a bunch of other tutorials. Compiling the firmware took longer and longer every time I added something else. Eventually, it took 55 minutes to compile. Instead of trying to figure out how to use the OLED display, I added seven LEDs in a 7-segment display orientation and used that to display the layer number! I also designed some decorations in Inkscape to put on the top plate of the case.
Finalized PCB and case design and added a spot to attach the OLED display or the rotary encoder. They both use the same pins, so I can only have one at a time and neither is currently in the firmware, but both are options for the future! I am excited that my first PCB is ready!
I’m mostly done assembling, flashed my firmware to the macropad, and it does nothing. I plan on flashing the standard QMK firmware it creates and checking if that does anything to make sure that the assembly was done correctly.
Integration nightmare! The reason the first firmware didn’t work is because the D# pins didn’t map directly to GP# pins, so it was listening for phantom pins that weren’t even on the microcontroller. Then the laptop had numlock on by default with no way to turn it off because it doesn’t have a numberpad or numlock key, so it wasn’t doing what was expected. After changing the pins correctly, the firmware wouldn’t compile and threw a bunch of errors, so I tested adding layers to the standard firmware QMK autogenerates. Once that got compiled, I tried to flash it to the board and I couldn’t get it into bootloader mode. I then tried a different laptop and it worked just fine.¯ _ (ツ)_/¯...

Completed the block diagram as the second part of Day 1, completing the first day. The block diagram is not very detailed as something one can find in a computer engineering documentation, but is enough to indicate the various inputs and outputs from the central 8-bit bus to various components. This will help me very much during the IRL build of the project! The Lapse for creating this: https://lapse.hackclub.com/timelapse/nQTostsh-AKQ
To start off Day 2, I started with creating the half and full adder circuits, which will be fundamental building blocks for the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) of the CPU. These circuits help create the operations that were described in the ISA such as ADD rr and SUB rr (addition and subtraction using 8-bits) Later, I will continue using these circuits to make a 8 bit calculator with the addition and subtraction operations after I am done researching how to efficiently do so. Lapse Recording: https://lapse.hackclub.com/timelapse/GU3NyWpgJQYZ
To start off Day 3, I worked on the ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) of the CPU, which will perform addition and subtraction. I built the 8-bit adder/subtractor using 8-bit inputs for the first number to be added/subtracted: A0-A7 and the second number: B0-B7. Then, I used 2 full adder ICs and connected them in a ripple form, so that the C_out of the first one is the C_in to the second. Then, I used a multiplexer to feed in the different operation (AND, OR, XOR, NOT, ADD/SUB) as inputs and used a 3-bit selector input to select the operation that was to be executed. I tested the circuit, and it worked perfectly. Now, the only things remaining are to implement SHL and SHR for the ALU. Lapse recording: https://lapse.hackclub.com/timelapse/qAFKFWqHWpiz
Completed Day 5 by finishing off the ALU circuit. Added the other required components such as the SHR (one of the crucial input to the multiplexer and also has an op-code), and the ZERO_OUT and NEG_OUT flags, which flag if the CPU reads a 00000000 (ZERO_OUT), and when the most significant bit is a 1 which signifies a negative number (NEG_OUT), these flags are required to tell the computer about zeros and negatives when they are loaded onto the bus. Completed Day 6 and 7 with finishing off the clock module and the register then I started on the RAM/MAR. I spent the last few days mapping out the core timing and memory architecture for the SAP-X. I started by designing a dual-mode system clock, deriving a hardware SR-latch from cross-coupled NAND gates to perfectly debounce the manual step button so it safely multiplexes with the astable clock signal. Devlogs:
Began work on the plugin. Added a basic command as well as an abstract Stat class. I also started working on a level class that implements the stat class as well as starting to actually manage stats on a player.
I fleshed out the statmanager and player profile system. The player’s profile and custom data is now loaded when the player joins, from file (unless the user is new, in which case new data is made), and saved to file when the user leaves. I’m using GSON to save the player data. The attached image shows how a file is named after a player UUID, and how it stores player data.
The leveling system now works. You can run /level to view your level, and when you reach enough level an event will be fired, and an event listener will run, sending a message to the player. Getting the custom events and listeners was the biggest pain, but I eventually decided on creating a StatChange event which runs whenever a stat is changed, and then the PlayerStatChange which extends StatChange while adding access to a player profile. I also had add a method to calculate level based off of XP. ALSO I finally uploaded to github! https://github.com/Mikeymoo5/MinecraftRPG/
I moved away temporarily from the stat system and worked on custom items. I now have an abstract class for custom items, and a CustomItemsManager class that makes it easier to access and get the items. The only current implementation is an wand that overrides the playerinteract event and sends the player a message when they do so. I also added a command /rpgget so I can easily get and test custom items. Next, I want to extend the AbstractItem class to have some custom items have stats.
The wands are roughly implemented now; I’ve attached a picture of a custom item (a wand) that summons lightning where the player is looking. Unfortunately I’ve been running into some issues with saving a user’s profile, and have been trying to debug them for a while now. As far as I’m aware I haven’t changed anything with the saving so I’m a bit lost right now! Hopefully I get things all sorted out
Fixed! Turns out gson was trying to serialize the entire references to the bukkit config file, as well as the runnable listener (which is being used to detect level ups), which caused some nasty circular reference issues. (the json files ended up being almost 8mb before I fixed it!) Edit: I forgot to click post, but since writing the original part above I managed to get a working mana display above the hotbar, and the wands now use mana. In doing so I broke player loading, and I also need to figure out a better way to store mana stats, since if I make the entire mana class transient then the player’s max mana will also be transient. All i had to do to fix was add the transient keyword to the fields that were causing issues....
