day 1 on my stardance slack bot. started by reading through the whole guide so i knew what i was building - a slack bot that answers slash commands. first thing i actually set up was builting the bot itself - a node project using slack bolt in socket mode, so it talks to slack over a websocket and doesn’t need a public url. wrote four slash commands: /sripin-ping replies with the bot’s latency, /sripin-help lists the commands, and /sripin-catfact and /sripin-joke pull from public apis with axios and have try/catch so a dead api doesn’t crash the bot. also added a tiny http health endpoint on port 3000 so there’s still something to open in a browser, plus a systemd service file for deploying on nest later. set up the git repo, wrote the readme, and pushed everything to github. next up: make the actual slack app, get the xoxb + xapp tokens into .env, run npm install, and test it live in #bot-spam.
built the bot on node + slack bolt in socket mode, so it talks to slack over a websocket with no public url. made the slack app from a manifest (auto-adds the slash commands, scopes, socket mode and the @mention event), generated the app-level and bot tokens, dropped them in a gitignored .env, and verified both against the slack api — “bot is running! now connected to slack”.then made it better: 11 commands now, all prefixed /sripin- so they don’t collide with other bots — ping, help, catfact, joke, quote, weather (wttr.in, no api key), define, 8ball, roll (NdM dice), flip, choose. every api call has a timeout and try/catch so a dead api can’t crash the bot, and a couple have offline fallbacks. fun commands post in-channel so everyone sees them. also fixed a real bug where the little http health endpoint would kill the whole bot if its port was taken, now it just disables itself — and added an error handler, clean sigint/sigterm shutdown, and a line that logs every incoming command. last step is deploying to hack club nest so it stays live 24/7 with my laptop closed.

what did you make? a slack bot for hack club with 11 slash commands, all prefixed /sripin- so they don’t clash with other bots. it does weather, dictionary lookups, jokes, cat facts, quotes, dice rolls, a magic 8-ball, coin flips and more, built on slack bolt over socket mode. what was challenging? getting the two slack tokens right and understanding socket mode, since the bot has no public url and just opens a websocket to slack. also hit a bug where my little health server would crash the whole bot if its port was taken. what are you proud of? that it’s actually solid, not just a toy. every api call has a timeout and try/catch so a dead api can’t kill it, a couple have offline fallbacks, and it shuts down cleanly so systemd restarts don’t break anything. what should people know so they can test it? invite the bot to a channel like #bot-spam, then try /sripin-help to see everything. good ones to start with: /sripin-weather london, /sripin-roll 2d6, /sripin-8ball will this work, /sripin-define serendipity....

First, a few questions: What is this? you may ask… Well, you’re in luck, I’ve got answers. I’m designing a system, similar to an Intercom, built to prevent the misfortune of being yelled at by my parents whenever they need something. What do I mean “Anti-Yelling”? Well, simply put, I’ve faced an issue. Whenever my parents want me to do something, whether it is online or a chore, they just yell across the house: MARCELLLLL!!!!!!!!!!! My parents seemingly don’t know what a text message is, what a call is, or what going to my room and asking me is. It always resorts to belting out until they’ve caught my attention… They are loud. And I’ve had enough! So I am embarking on a project, planning on making an intercom for my house. Whenever they need me, they click a button and I immediately hear it! Now, what have I worked on so far? Good question! So, for the first hour and a half of this project I have done: Coding and testing: I am working with the classic ESP32, using the ESP32S3 more specifically. I am planning on transmitting the voice through WiFi . Thus, since it is my first time working with WiFi and coding I checked out a tutorial . I am using the microcontroller in Station Mode , so it can communicate with other ESP32s through the router. I tested a few things: First, their ability to connect to the wifi (I used the WiFi.mode and WiFi.begin functions). Once connected, I tested for their IP address. Using the IPs, I sent messages between each-other to see if I could receive and print messages in both directions when sent through the router. I’ve set up a set of if and else functions to tell me if the messages failed or successfully sent, so I can tell at which end an issue is occurring on. Soldering parts and selecting parts: So, this wasn’t actually recorded but I wanted to make a quick note of it. I have two Amps (the MAX98357A). Sadly, they came unsoldered, so I soldered together all the pieces (somehow without burning myself or destroying the parts!!). I also chose a speaker, some resistors, LEDs, a microphone, etc. I faced a few Challenges along the way too: First, one of the most time consuming (I swear I’m not this dumb usually) problems I faced was that at some point I mixed up the two IP addresses of the ESP32s, and ended up sending messages to themselves instead of each other. I tinkered the code for so long before realizing that since they both were successfully sending the message, it wasn’t an issue of sending but receiving… oops! I plan on making this project quite elaborate and creative. I will design it to my interests. I hope you all like it!!! ( ALSO regarding the image of the intercom, this is what I mean by a stationary intercom for my room. However, it won’t be plain NOR will I allow the thought of having a “listen” button cross the mind of my parents. They MUST listen to me 24/7!!)"}]...
