It requires no classical internet connection (in the sense that you have to be able to reach the world wide web like google.com or similar), no accounts and no third-party servers. You control everything, and you’re the only one who sees the messages unencrypted. How to get it working quickly Begin by downloading the executable. Then, open a shell in the directory where the simple-chat or simple-chat.exe file is located (or open one via the start menu and cd into the folder where the file is). You will also need multiple shells for this; at least two (one server and one client) but I recommend testing with three to have two clients join onto one server. First, you need to create a server: ./simple-chat server --new
You will get an encryption key and a QR code. You need to copy or note down the encryption key. When scanned, the QR code also contains the encryption key. Then, you need to register the server so the clients can connect to it: ./simple-chat client --add
--address localhost
doesn’t need to be the same name you used in the first command, but I still strongly recommend it. Now, we wanna start the server: ./simple-chat server
You should see something like Running as server on port 42003 . Now, in a second terminal, type: ./simple-chat client
--name \"Testuser-1\" Then, you should see the TUI pop up. If not, use the README and the docs in the GitHub repo to troubleshoot. Note: In the above command, we’re using the explicit --name flag because if we want two clients on the same machine, they would try to load the same name from the configs. Therefore, we need to explicitly assign two different names via --name . If you want a second client, run the following in a third terminal: ./simple-chat client
--name \"Testuser-2\" Additional Info for the above guide In all of the commands, you should substitute
with the name for the server, for example Testserver . I recommend you use the same name everywhere, although you CAN theoretically give the actual server and the client-saved server a different name. My Own WebOS devlog 1 It begins! started the webOS jam today. the guide helped you make a plain welcome page so that’sexactly what i did: one html file, everything inline, no css file yet.named it pixelOS for now. it has: a heading + a little pixel face i made with svg - an intro paragraph with some <s> and tags like the extra challenge suggests- links to my playlist, github, and a thing that is definitely not a rickroll. Honestly it looks like a geocities page but it’s my geocities page. next up:turn this thing into an actual desktop with windows. want the about text to become an app inside the OS instead of just sitting on a page.
My own WebOS Day 2! big day. the welcome page is dead, long live the desktop.- moved the old welcome content into an “about.txt” window so nothing was wasted- top bar with the OS name, menus for each app, and a working clock (setInterval, updates every second)- windows: open, close, click-to-focus (z-index goes up each time so the clicked one is on top)- dragging via pointer events on the title bar. locked the top at 34px so you can’t drag a window behind the menu bar- 4 apps so far: about, notes, links, terminalthe notes app autosaves to localStorage while you type (debounced) and shows”saved at 5:45 pm” when it writes. terminal has help / whoami / date / open / clear /sudo (denied obviously) and a capybara command.also learned the hard way that missing turns every middle dot into “·”. fixed. next: make it feel less like the guide’s version — i want themes.
My own WebOS devlog 3 themes + polish! the feature the guide never asked for: theme switching . four swatches in the topbar (night / mint / sunset / paper), whole OS recolors instantly through css variables, and your pick is remembered in localStorage so it survives refresh.what that took:- every color in the OS now lives in ~12 css variables, including the wallpaper glows (this was the annoying part — the purple glow was hardcoded and followed me into every theme)- “paper” is a light theme which forced me to fix a bunch of colors that only worked on dark- focus rings on windows now use the accent color so the active window reads correctly in all themes. Bonus stuff:- you can deep link apps: index.html#notes, term opens those at boot- same trick for themes: theme=mint in the url forces one (nice for sharing a link that looks right)- per-app window widths (terminal is wider, links narrower)it finally feels like my OS and not the tutorial’s. requirements i think i’ve hit:multiple draggable windows , no password , a feature the guide didn’t list .
